Because measuring is knowing.
Learn more about how the combination of validated nutritional and cognitive metrics work together to help you optimize and protect your functional future.
Two tests, each providing metrics that truly matter.
Blood Spot Metrics
The dried blood spot test involves using a well-validated RBC method with specially designed collection cards to prevent oxidation. The method has been the focus of over 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Cognitive Function Metrics
The online cognitive function test leverages the Total Brain® International Database, the largest database of validated, normal brain function. Globally, it has served as the key instrument in over 450 scientific, peer-reviewed publications.

Calculated Metrics
These metrics combine both the blood spot nutritional metrics with cognitive function to provide a novel, engaging, and relevant story.
PREDICTED RESILIENCE
Our scoring algorithms weigh your nutritional lab scores and determine their impact on your current brain function over time . This allows an estimation of how your current diet quality influences your predicted rate of future cognitive decline.
FUNCTIONAL LONGEVITY
Based on the patient's age, expected and calculated rate of decline (from above) and expected lifespan, we can then estimate what percentage of life-years where normal cognitive function is likely to occur.
It is important to note that all integrated metrics are intended to be wellness markers only, and are not diagnostic or predictive of future disease. The FDA has not approved BrainSpan® to diagnose cognitive disease or impairment.
Blood Spot Metrics Explained
A summary of the nutritional blood spot metrics measured in the BrainSpan® report.
% PALMITIC ACID LEVEL
Excessive palmitic acid (usually from a diet high in simple carbohydrates) may result from excessive carbohydrate intake. High palmitic acid levels can damage cell membranes, interfere with leptin signaling (our "fullness hormone") and more.
% TRANS FAT LEVEL
Most of the trans fats that Americans consume are industrially produced from the heating and hydrogenation” of vegetable oils. Trans fats have been associated with a variety of negative health effects, which include heart attacks, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
VITAMIN D LEVEL
Vitamin D deficiency in the US has become a major source of poor health outcomes and is extremely common. As a part of a healthy lifestyle, a Vitamin D blood level in the optimal range may help support metabolic, heart, brain and immune health.
OMEGA-3 INDEX
Omega-3 fatty acids are the building blocks of the brain, determining the brain's integrity and ability to perform. They are to your brain cells what calcium is to your bones. EPA/DHA are obtained through eating oily fish or taking a high quality fish oil supplement.
OMEGA-6 TO OMEGA-3 RATIO
The Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio we measure is your level of arachidonic acid (AA), an omega-6 fatty acid, vs. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3 fatty acid. These have a major role in the level of inflammatory hormones produced by our cells.
% DHA LEVEL
By far, the most prominent fat in the brain is the Omega-3 called DHA. DHA is needed to support neurogenesis--the process of building new nerve cells in the brain. This helps protect our brain from cognitive decline and degenerative changes.
Cognitive Function Metrics Explained
A summary of the cognitive function metrics measured in the BrainSpan® report.
MEMORY CAPACITY
Working memory is the process whereby your brain is able to temporarily store information in the moment and recall it when you need it.
SUSTAINED ATTENTION
To efficiently sustain your attention and 'tune out' competing distractions, your brain must produce specific neurotransmitters.
COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY
Flexible attention is your capacity to rapidly adapt your thinking based on new information and not get stuck in compulsive behavior.
EXECUTIVE FUNCTION
Executive Function is a term that describes your brain’s ability to coordinate the multiple cognitive skills necessary to efficiently accomplish a task (problem-solving, decision making, and more).
PROCESSING SPEED
Processing speed is the pace at which you take in information, make sense of it and begin to respond. It has nothing to do with how smart you are -- just how fast you can take in and use information.
Customized Reporting
BrainSpan® tracks your outcomes over time by connecting each test with the last. Confidence comes from clearly seeing your progress along side of your recommendations.
PERSONALIZED
BrainSpan® reports uses your actual scores to power the recommendations making the recommendations more personalized to your needs.
SCORE TRACKING
Track up to four tests in one report to help you see objective evidence of your commitment to specific recommendations. This helps build compliance and long-term adherence.
FUNCTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE
By tracking brain function side-by-side with nutritional metrics, the linkage between diet and our brain health is made more clear, making the reason for changes that much more powerful.
